American Art A Youth Playing the Pipes Made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, North and Central America1884 Thomas Eakins, American, 1844 - 1916 Plaster * Gallery 118, American Art, first floor (Provident National Bank Gallery) 1975-88-1 Gift of Alton O'Steen, 1975 |
LabelAround 1883 Eakins began exploring classical themes, a genre popular at the time. In this idyllic relief, the artist recalls the sculptural frieze of the Greek Parthenon, plaster copies of which lined the walls of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. Eakins viewed the Parthenon frieze as "the highest perfection of relief."* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
